Technical visit of the delegation of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) to authorities and businessmen of Ecuador

Between November 21 and 25, 2022, a technical team from the Regional Integration Unit of ECLAC’s Trade and Regional Integration Division met with the Minister of Production, Trade, Investment and Fisheries (MPCIP), and the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, as well as various technical teams and negotiators to present the results of a study on the possible economic and social effects of the possible signing of a Trade Agreement in Ecuador and the People’s Republic of China.

This study is part of a broader one that ECLAC is carrying out together with a team of consultants from the Latin American Integration Association (ALADI), to assess the effects of a possible trade agreement between all ALADI member countries and China. Said study will analyze the evolution of bilateral trade between each country of said subregion and China, considering complementarities and export potential, exploring possible spaces to deepen regional integration from intra-ALADI value chains destined for China.

As part of the mission, the ECLAC technical team made individual presentations on the bilateral relationship between Latin America and China, and particularly Ecuador and China, with a group of economic sectors, among which the Federation of Exporters of Ecuador (FEDEXPOR) stands out. ), the Corporation for the Promotion of Exports and Investments (CORPEI), as well as companies from various economic sectors: food, beverages and tobacco, banana, flower grower, fishery, mechanical metal, automotive, ceramics, among others. In addition to MPCEIP technicians, representatives of the Ecuadorian Chinese Chamber of Commerce, the Ecuadorian American Chamber of Commerce, exporter associations and industry chambers participated in the meetings.

As a complementary activity to ECLAC’s visit to Ecuadorian authorities and businessmen, from November 21 to 25, 2022, ECLAC technicians held the Workshop “Impact Assessment with Stochastic Dynamic Computable General Equilibrium Models”, an activity aimed at strengthening the technical capacities of the team of officials of the Vice Ministry of Foreign Trade of the MPCEIP. Said Workshop was held in the city of Quito from November 28 to December 1, 2022.
