June 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –
A total of 9,314 people have been evacuated from the Philippine province of Albay due to the risk posed by the eruption of the Mayon volcano, which is causing explosions and lava fountains that have raised the alert level to Level 3, according to the Philippine authorities.
The volcano has spewed rocks and triggered earthquakes in the past 24 hours while the glow from the crater is clearly visible from nearby, the Phil Star newspaper reports.
“A total of 2,638 families, that is, 9,314 people, have been affected,” the National Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction explained this Saturday. All these people have already been accommodated in 21 evacuation centers.
A state of calamity has been declared in the province of Albay, specifically in 18 cities and municipalities, so the authorities can resort to emergency funds and control the prices of basic products. So far, resources have been mobilized for a value of 1.07 million pesos (17,700 euros).
Access is prohibited to an area six kilometers away from the volcano and flying in this region has been prohibited due to the risk it entails.
Authorities have warned of possible rock falls, landslides, avalanches, lava flows, lava fountains, pyroclastic currents, and explosions.
