European citizens in favor of a neutral position in the conflict between the US and China

The European Council for International Relations publishes a study in which its authors ask that the opinion of citizens be taken into account in geopolitical decisions and that a public consensus be sought before defining relations with countries such as Russia, the United States or China.

The experts who have participated in the study emphasizen the willingness of Europeans to remain neutral in a possible conflict between the US and China. The citizens surveyed recognize the important economic presence of China in Europe and would consider a red line in relations with the Asian giant if the latter decided to deliver weapons to Russia.

In addition, 46.3% of the responses place China as a partner of Europe compared to 24% who see it as a rival, with whom it is necessary to have a relationship, and 11% who consider it an adversary.

The study highlights that the citizens who have participated in the survey accept the closest relationship between Europe and the USbut want to be less dependent on US security guarantees (74%).

The results of this report warn of the European population’s desire to be heard on strategic issues such as international relations and geopolitics and 60% state that they feel little heard or just enough in 24%.

This analysis by the experts of the European Council has been carried out based on more than 16,150 surveys of citizens of eleven countries, including Spain.
