US spy satellites detected an explosion at the Nova Kakhovka dam before the collapse

A US official from the Joe Biden Administration has assured this Friday that American spy satellites detected a burst in the dam of Nova Kakhovka, in the Kherson region of Ukraine, just before it collapsed and unleashed a torrent of water in surrounding areas this week, the New York Times.

The official said, under condition of anonymitythat satellites equipped with infrared sensors detected a heat signal consistent with a large burst. US intelligence analysts suspect that Russia was behind the destruction of the dam, but US spy agencies do not yet have solid evidence as to who was responsible, Reuters reports.

On Tuesday, the intelligence services of the United States already indicated that they suspected that “Russia is behind the attack on the Nova Kakhovka dam.” However, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby stated during a White House press briefing that he “cannot say conclusively” that Russia is responsible.

Despite the statement issued by the Biden administration, the aforementioned officials confirm that the intelligence services are targeting the Kremlin. “We are doing the best we can,” Kirby said, “and we are considering evaluating it as a war crime.”
