Indonesia to Host Asia-Pacific Space Experts Meeting This Year

Indonesia will host the 29th international meeting of space experts in the region Pacific Asia. The meeting will be held in Jakarta from September 19 to 22, 2023.

This was announced by the Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Vienna, A. Alfiano Tamala, in the General Statement of the Indonesian Government during the 66th session of the United Nations Committee on the Uses of Outer Space for Peacekeepers (UNCOPUOS) held at the Vienna International Center, Austria on June 5.

Space experts from the Asia-Pacific region will discuss the theme “Accelerating Space Economies Through Regional Partnership”.

The deputy head of mission also mentioned that Indonesia has promulgated Government Regulation No. 7 of 2023 on Governance of Space Technology in February. This regulation covers the field of governance and protection of space technology, security rules and procedures, security in the governance of space technology, as well as the participation of society in the governance of space technology.

The meeting is organized by the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in collaboration with Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

The UNCOPUOS Committee session is the decision-making forum at the highest level, based on the reports of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee (STSC) and the Legal Subcommittee (LSC). The report of the UNCOPUOS Committee will be submitted to the United Nations General Assembly.

During this session of the UNCOPUOS Committee, the Indonesian Government also presented a report on its series of international activities in the space sector. Indonesia also reiterated the need for a sui generis regulation of the Geostationary Orbit (GEO), the need for clarity and certainty regarding the definition and boundaries between airspace and outer space, and the promotion of international cooperation to achieve the Space 2030 Agenda.

Special emphasis was placed on the need for technical cooperation in the development of human resources for the peaceful use of space technology, such as in the fields of health, telecommunications, meteorology and climate change.

The 66th session of the UNCOPUOS Committee is held from May 31, 2023 and will conclude on June 9, 2023.
