The first shipment of Vietnamese lychees imported by TT Meridian Ltd has arrived in the UK.
Thai Tran, the company’s managing director, said it first imported early-ripening lychees from Vietnam to compete with those from Mexico and China that are available on the British market.
In particular, Vietnamese lychee is now packaged with the image of the Vietnamese national flag on the packaging, which is intended to promote Vietnamese brands and help consumers easily recognize Vietnamese products in supermarkets.
He reported that the entire process, from picking the fruit on farms in Vietnam to selling it in the UK, takes just 36 hours.
Demand for Vietnamese lychee in the UK is increasing thanks to its high quality and short season, cultural exchange activities and trade promotion efforts, he said.
UK trade adviser Nguyen Canh Cuong says a major challenge for Vietnamese lychee exports to the UK is product preservation. As lychee must be eaten within three days of harvest to ensure its freshness, exporters need to master post-harvest technology.

The current price for Vietnamese lychee in the UK is £15 ($18.65) per kilo, and Cuong says the high price is partly because the fruit has to be transported by air.
