The implementation of new technologies has modified the way in which some areas of work are developed.
Camila Barrueto Prieto, Journalist UTalca.- In order to address the challenges posed by digital platforms in the workplace, the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences organized a seminar with the participation of academics Amparo Esteve Segarra, from the University of Valencia, Spain, and Federico Rosenbaum Carli, from the Catholic University of Uruguay.
During the conference entitled “Experiences and challenges of work via digital platforms in compared systems”, there was talk about the new ways of working via digital platforms that even increased significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Along these lines, the dean of the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences, Iván Obando Camino, pointed out that it is a subject that “has a contemporary impact and global reach.”
He also highlighted the efforts of researchers to “expand the frontiers of knowledge in new areas that are of interest to the law.”
The moderator and academic in charge of this international seminar, Rodrigo Palomo Vélez, pointed out that with this activity “the Fondecyt project on work through platforms ends with a flourish. This has allowed us to know the comparative experience, identify problems and possible solutions for a favorable implementation of our legislation”.
In this regard, Professor Esteve Segarra pointed out that “it is important as a society to assess from the perspective of law how we have to address the new legal problems that are created.”
He added that in this area there are “aspects related to the taxation of companies in charge, the decrease in physical commerce, among other interesting elements to analyze and that touch many disciplines.”
For his part, Professor Rosenbaum Carli, assured that it is relevant “to talk about these issues that are transversal among all students, even with those who do not want to practice labor law in the future.” He added that “new technologies are everywhere, they have modified and will continue to change human behavior and particularly that of the world of work.”
Finally, he stressed that this issue must be analyzed taking into account that the discipline “is protective and we have to adapt the protection and guardianship mechanisms to the new realities, to the new forms of business organization and the introduction of technological means in the field of job”.
