4 children die after being caught in the tide while fishing in Quebec

() — Four children were found unconscious on a Quebec beach on Saturday morning and later pronounced dead after they were caught in the tide while they were on a fishing trip with others, police said.

A spokesperson for the Quebec provincial police told that emergency teams were called at 2 a.m. local time on Saturday to Portneuf-sur-Mer, a riverside municipality on the north coast.

Eleven people were missing after going out on foot for a fishing excursion and being caught in the tide, the spokesman said. Six of those 11 people were rescued, and five remained missing overnight, he said.

At around 6 a.m. this Saturday, four children, all over the age of 10, were found unconscious and sent to hospital, according to the spokesperson. Police later confirmed that the children had died.

A man in his 30s is still missing, according to the Quebec provincial police, and they are looking for him with divers, boats and helicopters.

Quebec provincial police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, according to the spokesperson.
