Erdogan will be sworn in as president this Saturday before 20 international leaders

The President of Türkiye, Recep Tayyip Erdoganwill be sworn in this Saturday for a third termwith which he will add five years to his already two decades in powerin a ceremony in which the presence of about twenty international leaders is expected.

When this third term ends, in 2028, Erdogan will have held the head of state for fourteen years, plus the eleven he previously served as prime minister, which makes him Turkey’s longest-serving leader.

The investiture ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. (11:00 GMT) in Parliament and will continue two and a half hours later at the presidential palace, with the expected presence of a twenty international leadersaccording to the Efe agency.

NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberghas confirmed his attendance, noting that he will travel to Ankara on Saturday to attend the ceremony and hold bilateral meetings with Erdogan and other senior officials, in a visit that will last until Sunday.

According to the Turkish press, the attendance of the President of AzerbaijanIlham Aliyev, as well as the heads of State or Government of Somalia, Algeria, Qatar and several Balkan countries.

Erdogan became prime minister in 2003 after his Islamist AKP party won the 2001 elections and, after renewing his post twice, became elected president in 2014for the first time by direct suffragethanks to a recent constitutional reform.

Although the position required neutralityErdogan continued to direct Turkish politics from the Presidency and finally legalized this situation through a referendum in 2017, which abolished the figure of the prime minister and gives the president all executive power.

After revalidating the position in 2018, Erdogan stayed with 49.5% of the votes in the first round on May 14 and finally won in second round with 52.2%.
