The leaders of the United States, the European Union, France and Germany, as well as countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Venezuela, Iran or even the Taliban regime have already begun to congratulate the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, for his victory in the second round of the presidential elections this Sunday.
US President Joe Biden has conveyed to Erdogan his desire to “work together as NATO allies on bilateral issues and shared global challenges”, aware of Ankara’s importance as a member of the Atlantic Alliance in Finland’s accession process. , already approved by the Turkish Parliament, and Sweden, right now paralyzed.
The NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, expressed his desire to “continue working together” and prepare for the NATO summit that will take place in July in Vilnius (Lithuania) to Erdogan.
For his part, the Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has congratulated the Turkish president and has indicated that he “hopes to continue strengthening cooperation between Turkey and the United Nations,” according to a statement from his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric.
One of the first leaders of the European Union to congratulate Erdogan has been the French president, Emmanuel Macron who, on his Twitter account, has applauded Erdogan’s victory and recalled the “enormous challenges” that both countries will face.
“Return of peace to Europe, future of our Euro-Atlantic Alliance, Mediterranean Sea”, Macron has listed. “With President Erdogan, whom I congratulate on his re-election, we will continue to move forward,” he assured.
Another notable European congratulation was from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz: “Germany and Türkiye (Turkey) are close partners and allies, our people and our economies are deeply intertwined. Congratulations to President Erdogan: together we want to advance our common agenda with a new impetus”, has made it known on Twitter.
For the European Union, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has expressed her desire to “continue building” the relationship with Turkey, which she characterized as of “strategic importance for the benefit of both peoples”.
In addition, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, stressed that the EU “has a strategic interest in continuing a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship with Türkiye and all its people, as well as in a stable and secure environment in the eastern Mediterranean”.
Borrell, who has celebrated the high rate of participation in the elections and has indicated that he awaits the conclusions of the international electoral observation mission, has affirmed that the EU “is ready” to engage with Turkey “in order to move towards a constructive relationship ” for shared prosperity and stability that are supported by a base committed to Human Rights and International Law.
PUTIN AND ZELENSKY APPLAUD THE PRESIDENT
Russia and Ukraine have celebrated Erdogan’s victory in unison, instrumental in the important indirect agreement reached between the two countries for the export of Ukrainian grain and Russian fertilizer for humanitarian reasons, of which Turkey is a guarantor country.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated that Erdogan’s victory “was a natural result of his selfless work as head of the Republic of Turkey, clear evidence of the Turkish people’s support for his efforts to strengthen state sovereignty and bring carry out an independent foreign policy”.
The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, has applauded Erdogan’s victory with a view to “further strengthening the strategic partnership for the benefit of our countries, as well as strengthening cooperation for the security and stability of Europe,” according to a message posted on his Twitter account.
LULA AND MADURO CONGRATULATE ERDOGAN
The President of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has also wished Erdogan a “good mandate with a lot of work” for the Turkish people, in which he can “count on Brazil’s association in global cooperation for peace, in the fight against poverty and for the development of the world”.
The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, has celebrated the triumph of Erdogan, his “brother and friend” and congratulated the Turkish people for “this new victory, and wishing to continue working together to build the new world. Long live Türkiye!”
From Latin America, the Argentine leader, Alberto Fernández, has also celebrated the re-election of his Turkish counterpart, hoping for mutual cooperation between technology and mining; while the Cuban president, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, has conveyed his “most sincere congratulations”: “We wish him success in his duties and we reiterate our willingness to continue promoting the ties of friendship and cooperation between both countries,” he added.
As regards other countries, the recovering Taliban Prime Minister, Mohamed Hasan Ajund, has also congratulated the president on behalf of the Afghan people, and expressed his wish that “friendly relations” with Turkey continue, the DPA agency reports.
The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán; the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and other prominent leaders such as the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau; or the Libyan head of government, Abdulhamid Dbeibé, have also conveyed their congratulations to the Turkish president.
