ISLAMABAD, 30 May. (DPA/EP) –
At least six people have died in Afghanistan due to heavy rains that have fallen in several provinces in recent days, according to the spokesman for the National Disaster Management Authority of Afghanistan, Shafiullah Rahimi.
Several more people have been injured, while a hundred families have been forced to leave their homes due to the destruction left by the rainfall, which has also affected more than 3,000 acres of agricultural land.
Seasonal floods occur in Afghanistan every year, but decades of conflict, together with environmental degradation and insufficient investment in disaster risk reduction, have contributed to increasing the vulnerability of the population, the United Nations has warned.
The UN has also stated that Afghanistan is going through the biggest and most serious humanitarian crisis in the world, after the restrictions imposed by the Taliban have caused the departure of several organizations.
