At least 10 people have been killed and more than 50 injured after a bus carrying pilgrims on their way to a shrine in the Indian-controlled part of Kashmir plunged into a ravine, authorities have confirmed.

“Ten people have died and 55 have been injured. The injured have been taken to the hospital,” said the Superintendent of Police in Jammu and Kashmir, Chandan Kohli, who specified that “local residents” have collaborated in the rescue efforts. .

Likewise, he has indicated that the bus was carrying more people than allowed and has added that this point will be part of the investigations into the causes of the accident, which have not yet been clarified, as reported by the Indian television network NDTV.

In this sense, the general director of the Police in the province, Dilbag Singh, has pointed out that “speeding could be the cause of the accident.” The bus fell into a ravine near Katra on its way to the Vaishno Devi shrine.

For her part, the president of India, Droupadi Murmu, stated in a message on her account on the social network Twitter that “the death of many pilgrims in the bus accident in Jammu is extremely unfortunate”, while transferring their “deep condolences” to the families of the victims.
