SAN SALVADOR – After a meeting between Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and the high-ranking security officers of El Salvador on Sunday, the government decided to launch an offensive against gang remnants early this Monday in order to prevent attempts to regroup them. structures.
The Security Cabinet indicated that the Mara Salvatrucha and Barrio 18 have sought to regroup since the beginning of May, as happened in Chalatenango, a department north of San Salvador, where a policeman was murdered on May 16.
Marvin Reyes, founder and leader of the Police Workers Movement (MTP) told the voice of america that as of 12:00 this Monday, the government will suspend licenses to all police personnel, that is, they will not be able to take breaks, a measure not yet confirmed by the Salvadoran government.
According to a police intelligence report on May 27, the Salvadoran government received an alert of an alleged meeting between members of the Mara Salvatrucha in which it was concluded that homicides would increase in the Central American country.
“It is known that the members of the National Ranfla of the MS13 in recent days held a ‘meeting’ (meeting), which resulted in concrete guidelines for program runners and cliques at the national level. The main objective being to commit homicides, ” points out the report, to which the VOA had access.
Reyes believes that this report and the fourth anniversary of the Bukele government could be the reasons for the suspension of licenses and the offensive against gangs.
“Two situations are being handled: the intelligence report dated May 27 that indicates gang threats against security force personnel, and also that it is four years since President Bukele’s government, and in the face of demonstrations and protests from various social sectors and organized groups that can be generated want to have all the staff available,” he told the Voice of America.
Since this Monday, the police institution has announced several operations nationwide. As well as checkpoints on the country’s main highways to identify gang members.
In official reports, the police not only stop private vehicles but also buses to drop off passengers and check them. It also maintains a presence in public transport terminals and in some educational institutions.
