The Government of Armenia has denounced on Monday the recent “threats” of ethnic cleansing made by the Azeri president, Ilham Aliyev, against the population of Nagorno Karabakh.
The Armenian Foreign Ministry has appealed to the international community about “another warmongering statement” by Aliyev, which the Armenian authorities consider to be aimed at “nullifying the efforts of Armenia and international partners aimed at establishing peace, stability and security in the region.
“Contrary to the UN Charter, the commitment to refrain from the threat of the use of force in the Sochi trilateral declaration of October 2022 (…) or ongoing negotiations on the normalization of bilateral relations, the president of Azerbaijan once again threatens Armenia with the use of force and the people of Nagorno Karabakh with ethnic cleansing,” reads a statement.
In this sense, Yerevan has regretted that “violations of agreements and commitments” are several, since Aliyev “threatens revenge and criminal prosecution”, while “it is evident that he does not want to address existing problems, but to move forward with the principle according to which ‘there are no Armenians from Nagorno Karabagh, so there is no problem in Nagorno Karabagh'”.
“Such actions also contradict the logic of the ongoing negotiations, including the approaches of the actors leading a mediation mission for the settlement. There is no doubt that the recognition of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity cannot be interpreted as the authority to implement ethnic cleansing against the population of Nagorno-Karabakh,” the letter continues.
The President of Azerbaijan last Sunday declared that the Armenian minority of Nagorno Karabagh would have to submit to Azeri norms, for which I stress that the authorities –Parliament, president, ministers, deputies– should resign to comply with the Azerbaijani legislation. Baku.
“Any amnesty can be discussed,” Aliyev said, before criticizing that the Armenian minority rejected invitations to discuss this pact: “There will not be a third (invitation),” he settled. “Things will develop differently now. They will receive amnesty only if they voluntarily leave their posts and apply for Azeri citizenship,” he added.
The Armenian authorities have also denounced that Baku “defies the entire civilized community by threatening to occupy new sovereign territories of Armenia through the use of force.” Thus, they have made an appeal to the international community about the statements by the Azeri leader who, according to Yerevan, “is preparing the ground for another aggressive action against the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, depriving them of the right to live in freedom, security and dignity”.
The two countries have been involved in various confrontations in recent years over the control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a territory with a majority Armenian population that has been the focus of conflict since it decided to separate in 1988 from the Azerbaijan region integrated into the Soviet Union.
