The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has condemned this Monday the violence that has taken place throughout the day in Kosovo, where there have been clashes between Kosovar Serb protesters and members of the NATO mission (KFOR ).
“The EU condemns in the strongest terms today’s appalling violence in Zvecan. The violent acts committed against KFOR troops, the media, civilians and the Police are absolutely unacceptable,” said the head of diplomacy. through its profile on the social network Twitter.
Thus, Borrell has urged the Kosovo authorities and the protesters “to calm the situation immediately and unconditionally.” “We hope that the parties will act responsibly and immediately find a political solution through dialogue,” he added.
KFOR reported hours before that at least 25 members had been injured, while condemning “unprovoked attacks against KFOR forces in northern Kosovo”. “These attacks are totally unacceptable. The violence must stop immediately. I ask all parties to avoid actions that could further increase the tension and engage in dialogue,” he stressed.
The incidents have occurred in Zvecan, one of four Serb-majority municipalities in northern Kosovo. KFOR troops have used tear gas and stun bombs against demonstrators gathered in Zvecan to protest against the town’s new mayor, of Albanian origin.
Protesters have thrown stones, bottles and even Molotov cocktails. There are a dozen cars on fire, including a police vehicle.
For their part, Serbian sources have reported 52 people treated at the Kosovska Mitrovica Clinical Hospital, three of them seriously ill. The director of the center has specified that there are treated by impact bombs, rubber bullets and live ammunition for the riots in Zvecan, reports Novosti.
