For his great contribution to the development of marine science research, translated into more than 127 scientific publications and a long 40-year career as an academic at the Faculty of Marine Sciences and Biological Resources, Dr. Marcelo Oliva Moreno of the University of Antofagasta, received recognition at the last congress of the specialty held in Puerto Montt.
David Pasten, Journalist UA.- The XLII Congress of Marine Sciences is taking place in the southern Chilean city, and during its opening day, the UA academic and researcher received the Honor in Scientia Marina 2023 Award, and also gave the inaugural talk of the meeting.
“It is a very important recognition that forces me to maintain my level of scientific-teaching activity and my commitment to the Chilean Society of Marine Sciences, at the same time, it is an incentive to continue motivating the new generations in this path of science . The imprint that I try to instill in new professionals and researchers is both to generate and to transmit the knowledge generated”, said Dr. Oliva.

Dr. Marcelo Oliva Moreno began his university studies at the University of Concepción, entering the year 1970 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology. In September 1973, he was expelled from the University, which led him, along with other expelled Biology students, including Jorge Zegers, Eduardo Durán, Julio Vásquez and Hrvoj Ostojic, to continue their studies in Peru.
By 1991, and when democracy was recovered, he returned to Chile and the University of Antofagasta recognized his status as politically exonerated and he was reinstated as an academic, continuing with his research activities, mainly in the field of marine parasitology.
To date, a total of 127 scientific publications and more than 240 presentations at national and international conferences are part of the hard work of the academic and scientist Marcelo Oliva Moreno.
