Why did Brace Yourself Games lay off half of its staff?

The news came after producer Crystal Savin announced on Twitter that she lost her job as one of those affected by “a 50% cut in the workforce” at Brace Yourself Games.

More developers, such as user interface programmer Ben Humphries, corroborated the information and announced that they had left the study.

In the midst of the uncertainty, the study broke the silence and, although it did not speak of the dismissal of half of its employees, it confirmed that it said goodbye to “a portion” of its workforce.

“Yesterday, the senior management of Brace Yourself Games made the incredibly difficult decision to lay off a portion of the company’s employees,” the developer said in a statement to PC Gamer. “This decision was not made lightly, as we highly value our talented and dedicated employees.”

Brace Yourself Games Canceled Projects After Mass Layoff

The study did not reveal the reasons why it laid off so many staff, but it assured that as part of its commitment to its employees it is offering support packages so that the transition period is not so hard.

“We are also working to address the impact on our remaining team members and ensure that we continue to meet the needs of our players.”

According to the details, this decision will not impact ongoing and already announced projects, such as Rift of the NecroDancer. On the contrary, it was confirmed that some unannounced games or projects had to be “set aside” or “archived”, without it being clear if they could be resumed in the future.

In case you missed it: Cadence of Hyrule had a DLC with the favorite character of Zelda: Majora’s Mask.

According to the studio’s official LinkedIn page, there were 43 people working in the office it has in Vancouver, Canada, which means that after the layoffs, Brace Yourself Games’ workforce would be just over 20 employees.

We remind you that this company announced months ago that it would not only do development functions, but would also act as a publisher to promote other indie games. The company plans to publish Cobalt Core and Super Rat Boat Together in the remainder of the year.
