Portugal revives the nightmare of the forest fires that, in 2007, killed more than 100 people. The high temperatures and the winds have put the country in a state of contingency and have returned the fear that history could repeat itself.
At least 1,400 troops are working in the center and south against fires that have already destroyed more than 10,000 hectares and forced the evacuation of more than 800 people.
The high temperatures, added to the prevailing wind, have helped generate more than 170 fires in the country, although the towns of Leiria (Pombal), in the center, and Faro (Algarve), in the south, were the most affected this Wednesday , next to the park of Peneda Geres (north) and Palmela (Setúbal, near Lisbon).
About 160 injured, four of them seriously. The Portuguese Government maintains a red alert in much of the country and has declared a state of contingency, which includes the prohibition of stubble burning, the use of pyrotechnics, machinery and activity in forest areas and the reinforcement of firefighting equipment, until next Friday.
