Microsoft has announced that it will maintain some functions of the extinct Internet Explorer in exceptional cases, with the aim of improving the service it offers with Edge and that this be “compatible and more secure”.
The technology company announced the end of support for Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) by its Microsoft 365 online ecosystem services in May 2021. Then, he said that the Microsoft 365 desktop app browser would no longer be supported for certain versions of Windows 10.
In June of last year, Microsoft stopped supporting Internet Explorer, so that from then on, only Microsoft Edge could be used as the main web browser developed by the company.
It was months later, in December 2022, when the company advanced that on February 14 of this year it would permanently disable the desktop web browser on some Windows 10 systems, which until then I had endured it.
This change was made via an update to Microsoft Edge and not an update to Windows 11, as I had previously noted, to help organizations in this transition. So, the visual references of the previous browser (Explorer) were maintained in the new one (Edge), although it gave these companies the option to disable them before February 14.
Those that did not do it manually, would see the final changes with a monthly security update, which would make these references disappear, such as the start menu or the taskbar, on June 13, 2023.
With that communication, Microsoft warned companies that if they become dependent on any of the services available in Internet Explorer 11, they should take steps to complete their transition to the new browser before that date. Otherwise these users they would lose access to applications available dependent on the old browser.
The company has now backtracked and announced that it will no longer remove the IE11 Visual References, rather, organizations will continue to keep track of these changes to decide when to remove them through their Internet Explorer disable policy.
In a recent update, Microsoft has clarified that some users will still be able to access Internet Explorer from Microsoft Edge because in the coming months it will make a series of changes to the system to “redirect a small subset of exceptional scenarios.”
The company will allow this browser compatibility to help make Microsoft Edge “more secure” and will report the details of the changes that will be made in the release notes for Windows and Microsoft Edge.
“These changes are intended to provide a better user experience and a smooth transition from IE11 to Microsoft Edge to ensure a faster and more efficient service and a more secure and modern web experience,” he added in this update.
