Thousands of people protest in Hungary against a new law against teachers

May 20. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Thousands of teachers and students have protested this Friday in Budapest, Hungary, against the new law that would eliminate the status of “public servant” for teachers and against the firing of tear gas by the Police against protesters in a previous demonstration.

“They know full well that the children are being hurt, but it doesn’t bother them. The Orbán system harms the children and even destroys our education, takes away our future and takes revenge on our teachers,” the organizers of the demonstration said, according to the Hungarian newspaper ‘Blikk’.

During the demonstration, which began at half past five in the afternoon and ended at seven, there have been some clashes between demonstrators and the Police, although no injuries or arrests have been reported.

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has faced a multitude of citizen protests and warnings from the European Union for the authoritarian drift of some of his reforms, although on May 4 the EU itself praised the judicial reform approved by Parliament of Hungary and for which the country managed to unlock 13,000 million euros of European funds.
