Indonesia offers to mediate and “serve as a bridge” between Russia and Ukraine in full invasion

May 19. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has offered this Friday to mediate and “serve as a bridge” between Russia and Ukraine in the midst of the Russian invasion of the territory and has expressed that he considers that the sanctions imposed against Moscow “are not effective”.

“Indonesia is prepared to serve as a bridge between Russia and Ukraine (…) and make its contribution to the elimination of differences. Peace must be achieved as quickly as possible because there are people dying,” he said.

In this sense, he has pointed out that the sanctions of the international community are not only not ineffective but also “do not contribute to sustaining the dialogue” between the opposing parties.

Widodo was the first president to visit Russia and Ukraine in the summer of 2022 in an attempt to start a dialogue process. Since then, he has confirmed his neutral position and his willingness to mediate the conflict.

However, the Kremlin has stipulated that there are no premises to suggest that the situation in Ukraine can be resolved peacefully and has stressed that its objective is to carry out the “special operation” that began in February 2022.
