ECLAC will launch its first accessible publication

Next Friday, May 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in Chile (GMT-4), the first accessible publication of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will be launched. This is the executive summary of the report Social Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2022: the transformation of education as a basis for sustainable development in a version compatible with screen readers and in an accessible format for people with visual disabilities.

The event will be held in a hybrid format -face-to-face and virtual- from the ECLAC headquarters in Santiago de Chile, one day after the commemoration of the World Day to Promote Awareness on Web Accessibility (Global Accessibility Awareness Day, GAAD, for its acronym in English).

The presentation will be given by the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, with comments by Natalia Guala, head of Alliances and International Programs of the ONCE Social Group (virtual); Selene Caraballo, ECLAC consultant (virtual); and Juan Ángel de Gouveia, President of the Latin American Network of Organizations of People with Disabilities and their Families (RIADIS) (virtual).

The closing ceremony will include Raúl García-Buchaca, ECLAC Deputy Executive Secretary for Program Administration and Analysis (video); and Sally Shaw, Director of ECLAC’s Documents and Publications Division (in person). The Director of the Social Development Division, Alberto Arenas, will moderate.

The initiative is part of ECLAC’s Disability Inclusion Strategy (CEPALDIS) for the period 2021-2025. This responds to the mandate of the United Nations Disability Inclusion Strategy (UNDIS) and is in line with Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The launch constitutes a first step in the process of advancing towards the accessibility of the intellectual production of ECLAC, one of the five regional commissions of the United Nations (UN).
