Two more skeletons have been discovered in the archaeological site of Pompeii, victims of the earthquake that accompanied the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
Investigators believe that what they found under the rubble of a house are the remains of two men in their 55s. Both died of “multiple trauma” after parts of the building collapsed, say the experts, quoted by Dpa.
One of them was struck by a part of a collapsing room wall. The entire upper part of the room collapsed in on itself, crushing and burying the other man. Both skeletons were found lying in the position of one giving the impression that he had tried to protect himself with his raised arm.
The discovery of the skeletons shows “how much remains to be discovered about the terrible eruption of AD 79,” Italian Culture Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said. it’s a statement.
“Modern excavation techniques allow us to help to better understand the hell that completely destroyed the city Pompeii in two days and killed many inhabitants,” said Gabriel Zuchtriegel, German director of the archaeological site.
Archaeologists continue to find spectacular discoveries in the sunken Roman city at the foot of the Vesuvius volcano. In AD 79, ash, mud and lava covered the ancient city after several eruptions, thus preserving it.
In the 18th century, Pompeii was rediscovered, making it one of the most popular tourist spots in Italy today.
