SAN SALVADOR – A Salvadoran police officer was murdered on May 16 in the department of Chalatenango, north of the Salvadoran capital, while he was patrolling the area, the police institution reported.
The identity of the agent has not yet been revealed. However, the institution assured that there is already an operation underway to find those responsible. So far, according to reported the National Civil Police of El Salvador, a “terrorist” has been captured.
The homicide occurred while the Legislative Assembly of that country is discussing the approval of the fourteenth extension of an emergency regime that started on March 27, 2022after a wave of murders caused by the gangs, and which has left more than 68,000 captured.
President Nayib Bukele said, through his social networks, that the murder will not go unpunished.
This is the first murder of a police officer so far in 2023. Last year, when the country had been under an emergency regime for three months, three police officers were killed by suspected gang members in the western part of the country.
“We strongly condemn this act of blood, we are making all the coordination in the territory to find the cowardly murderers. Know that there will be no impunity or mercy for the guilty, they will be brought to justice,” added the security minister of that country, Gustavo Villatoro.
