US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby confirmed Tuesday that a convoy of diplomats from the US Embassy in Nigeria has been attacked in Ogbaru, in the Nigerian state of Anambra.
“We are aware of some casualties, maybe even some deaths, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves,” Kirby told a news conference, adding that no US nationals have been injured in the attack.
A security source on condition of anonymity has specified to the ‘Daily Trust’ newspaper that at least four people have died and several more have been injured, although the nationality of the victims is unknown.
Insecurity in Nigeria, previously centered in the north of the country, has spread in recent months to other areas, such as the southeast, raising alarms about the possible expansion of terrorist and criminal networks.
