The video game industry withstood the COVID-19 pandemic and once it was overcome, it has consolidated its growth. This is what the Yearbook 2022 presented today by the Spanish Association of Video Games (AEVI), in whose pages it is reported that during the past year the consumption of video games in Spain was 2,012 million dollars, 12% more than the previous year. The growth is largely explained by an increase in online billing, while the distribution of games in physical format is maintained.

The 2,012 million euros that video games registered in 2022 in Spain are divided between the 832 million euros of physical turnover, which represents a year-on-year decrease of 5.67% due to the lower sale of consoles and accessories, and the 1,180 million euros of online billing, which increased by 29.24% compared to the previous year. The growth of the online sector is defined by the increase in revenue from online platforms, which went from registering 379 million euros in 2021 to 581 million euros in 2022 (+53.5%). Subscription services (+25%) and applications (+10%) also rose, but to a lesser extent.

In 2022, a total of 7.1 million video games, 840,000 consoles and 3.1 million accessories were sold in Spain.

Regarding the number of users, there are 18.1 million players in Spain, the same as a year ago. 53% are men and 47% women. In the distribution by age, the range in which there are more players of both sexes is that of 25 to 34 years. On the other hand, if we look at how many hours a week Spanish players spend playing games, we see that it has dropped from 8.1 hours in 2021 to 7.42 hours in 2022. In other neighboring countries they have also experienced this decline, but more is at stake in them. For example, the average in Germany is 10.2 hours, in France 7.9 hours and in Italy 7.5 hours.

“For the first time, the video game industry exceeds the barrier of 2,000 million euros in turnover. Specifically, we are talking about a volume of 2,012 million euros, a figure that already brings us closer to the levels handled by countries such as France or the United Kingdom”, says Alberto González Lorca, president of AEVI. “These data support the good health of the sector, not only in economic terms, but in terms of quality job creation and as an industrial engine of the national economy.”
