NATO put two Spanish planes on alert after blocking a Russian jet from a Polish one in the Black Sea

NATO put its air force on alert last Friday for an incident in which a Russian and a Polish fighter plane almost collided. According to an official of the agency, the event occurred while the Polish plane was patrolling in the framework of its border surveillance obligations with Frontex. As a consequence, two combat planes from the Spanish Air Force and another two from the Romanian Air Force were placed under surveillance.

As reported by the Romanian Ministry of National Defense in a statement, on Friday a Polish border guard aircraft of the model L-410 Turbolet was carrying out routine surveillance work around 1:20 p.m. on Friday at about 60 kilometers east of Romanian airspace. There he was intercepted by a Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter-bomber.

The Romanian Ministry noted that the Russian aircraft carried out “aggressive and dangerous maneuvers” on several occasions, creating turbulence for the Polish aircraft, which had difficulty maintaining control. Polish Defense sources specify that there were three approaches that violated the safety distance, passing just 5 meters from the bow of the L-410 Turbolet.

In response, the NATO Combined Air Operations Center in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) put two Spanish and two Romanian F-18 fighter jets on alert, which are destined for Air Police missions. As the incident was not major, it was not necessary for the aircraft to take off Although they were prepared for it.

The Polish plane ended up landing safely at the Mihail Kogălniceanu airport half an hour after the incident, without any of its five crew members being injured.

The Romanian Ministry of Defense assessed that the aggressive maneuvers of the Russian plane “against an unarmed aircraft carrying out a Frontex mission aimed at monitoring the migratory risk in the Black Sea basin is totally unacceptable.” “This incident is further proof of the provocative approach of the Russian Federation towards the Black Sea,” he added.

Precisely this Monday the Polish Defense Minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, has confirmed that his country has already delivered the ten promised MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine. He did so during a visit to Canada in which he thanked the North American country for its support for the Ukrainians with the delivery of weapons such as Leopard tanks, which, in his opinion, encouraged other States to “follow his example, creating a coalition of tanks”.
