May 14. (EUROPE PRESS) –
At least 33 civilians have died after a terrorist attack perpetrated on May 11 in the town of Youlou, Mouhoun province (Burkina Faso).
The Governor of the region, Babo Pierre, has described as “cowardly” and “barbaric” the assault against “peaceful populations that dedicated themselves to gardening”, according to what the Burkinabe news agency AIB published this Saturday.
The authorities are carrying out security operations and have asked the population to “redouble vigilance and continue collaborating” with the security forces to achieve “definitive” peace.
Burkina Faso has seen a sharp increase in jihadist attacks in recent years, the work of both al Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates in the region. Abuses by the security forces against the population have helped these groups in their recruitment efforts.
The Burkinabe authorities, now led by the military coup leader Ibrahim Traoré, decreed a general mobilization in April to face the increase in jihadist attacks in the country, the work of both the Al Qaeda affiliate and the Islamic State.
