The president of CloserStill Media SpainAgustín Torres, advocates the use of sustainable energy in the face of a volume of data that “grows by leaps and bounds” and “inevitably”.
The director of the company, which organizes the Artificial Intelligence (AI) fair in Spain Big Data & AI World, has taken advantage of AI Day, which is celebrated this Saturday, to underline that the world “faces a challenge to make global growth sustainable”.
Torres has mentioned this because the widespread use of this technology “generates a large volume of data that are processed in data centers” whose operation requires electricity and water.
“Data centers need electricity to keep processors running and water for cooling systems, which prevent servers from overheating,” he added.
With this, he recalled that these “are responsible for up to 3 percent of world consumption of electricity at present”, although it is expected “to be at 4 percent in 2030.
Although AI “brings great opportunities to improve the world”, such as boosting productivity or “stimulation of economic growth”, Torres has insisted that it is important to bet on technologies that reduce energy consumption and clean energy.
“Technologies must be promoted that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, use renewables and reuse residual energy, such as heat, coming from the processes themselves”, he added, proposing that these data centers be located in locations with moderate temperatures that require “less energy effort in cooling.”
Regarding sustainability, the director of CloserSill Media commented that “there is great awareness in the sector” and that “the main global operators of these centers adhere to the main initiatives of sustainable development”.
Likewise, he recalled that in January 2021 the Climate Neutral Data Centers Pact (CNDCP) was launched, an agreement that “includes the commitment to make these data centers be climate neutral by 2030.
