A court in Islamabad granted bail to former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday after his arrest, which had sparked riots across the country, was overturned.
“The court has granted Imran Khan a two-week provisional bail and has ordered the authorities not to detain him again” during this period in the corruption case, one of his lawyers, Khawaja Harris, told reporters at the exit. of the court.
Imran Khan arrived at the court on Friday morning, escorted by a horde of law enforcement officers. A group of sympathetic lawyers gave him a warm welcome, chanting: “We will fight for freedom.”
End of the “black chapter”
A dozen activists who were outside the building and tried to enter the facilities were arrested. There were clashes between police and protesters on a road in Islamabad. But overall, the situation is under control. The city is still cordoned off by police.
In any case, the court’s decision marks the end of the “black chapter”, as the army has dubbed the chaos that followed the arrest of the former prime minister on Tuesday. The decision means that Imran Khan cannot be detained for the next two weeks.
His arrest four days ago was ordered by an anti-corruption agency in connection with a case in which Imran Khan is accused. That same day he was due to appear in court for another corruption case. The hearing could not be held, so the Supreme Court invalidated his detention on Thursday.
