May 7. (EUROPE PRESS) –

At least two people have died this Saturday after a bombardment by the Ukrainian Army of the city of Donetsk, capital of the province of the same name (east), in which four others have been injured, including a child.

Ukrainian forces fired 84 projectiles of 152 and 155-millimeter caliber and another 30 MLRS rockets, according to a statement on the Telegram account of the city’s mayor, Alexei Kulemzin.

Donetsk belongs to the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), self-proclaimed as such in 2014 after the Euromaidan and annexed by Russia in October 2022.

The Euromaidan protests erupted when Yanukovych rejected an agreement with the European Union in November 2013 to opt for a pact with the Russian government in exchange for significant financial aid. The demonstrations eventually led to Yanukovych’s flight.

Russia, for its part, benefited from the turbulent atmosphere in Ukraine to annex the Crimean peninsula and openly support pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine’s Donbas. This entire situation was a breeding ground for the subsequent Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
