The EU has condemned “in the strongest terms” the execution of the Swedish-Iranian dissident Habib Chaab in the Islamic republic for the crime of terrorism.
“The growing number of EU citizens and dual EU and Iranian nationals being detained in Iran, the restrictions placed on consular access to EU citizens and the denial of consular protection and the right to a fair trial are a violation of International Law”, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, denounced in a statement, expressing his condolences to the Chaab family and expressing his “full solidarity” with Sweden.
Brussels “recalls once again its drastic opposition to the application of the death penalty in any circumstance”, continues the text, which recalls that “the death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and constitutes a definitive, cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment”.
“The European Union calls on Iran to prevent further executions in the future and to pursue a coherent policy for the abolition of the death penalty,” it continues.
The Government of Sweden has summoned the ambassador of Iran in the Nordic country to protest the execution.
Chaab was a founder of the separatist group Movement of the Arab Struggle for the Liberation of Ahvaz, which Iran accuses of committing numerous attacks in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, including a 2018 attack on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard that resulted in a near death. thirty dead.
However, the Iranian Justice blames his activities for the death of more than 450 people since 2005 in the province of Khuzestan and its surroundings to achieve its independence.
In addition, they accused him of working for numerous espionage services such as the CIA (of the United States), the Mossad (of Israel), Sapo (of Sweden) and other countries in the region.
After residing in Sweden for 14 years, Chaab disappeared in Turkey in 2020 under unclear circumstances, only to reappear in Iran, already in custody.
The trial took place in mid-March, when his death sentence was upheld. The Swedish government stated that he was making every effort to negotiate with the Iranian authorities, who only considered him as an Iranian citizen because they did not recognize his dual nationality.
