Stress-free pork wants to conquer Mexico

Bord Bia representatives ensure that a stress-free animal, be it pork or beef, will be better quality meat. In fact, the European Union is the largest exporter of pork in the world and in Ireland, after having strict health measures, they want to reach the premium market of Mexico.

“Mexico is the third importer of pork in the world, we know that there are many types of buyers, there are small and large buyers in the country,” said Bord Bia.

Ireland knows that the main global consumer of pork is China, but the Asian giant has reduced its imports since 2020 due to the pandemic, and is looking for alternative markets such as Mexico that caters to international tourists. At the beginning of this 2023, Bord Bia visited Mexico at the Expo Carnes y Lácteos in Monterrey, Nuevo León in order to publicize sustainable breeding and the quality of its products.

Ireland seeks to export one of its star products, which is pork belly, and is exploring the possibility of also bringing in the entrails and other parts that are not used in Ireland and that Mexico does not waste.

Ireland knows that although the costs would not be accessible to all Mexicans, the tourism sector could take advantage of the arrival of demanding palates. In exchange, the country would offer pork free of stress substances that affect the health of human beings.

To avoid stress in the animals, Ireland has good management practices: pigs do not travel for more than two hours on the road to avoid stress, in addition, the diet -based mainly on grains- helps fat to be better distributed in the animal and that it is of better quality.

What has been the price of pork in Mexico?

Ireland knows that one of the challenges is the price at which they will sell their meat, since the Mexican market usually offers better prices and for this reason they are betting that the quality of their meat is attractive enough to pay the cost.

Pork meat, which is usually cheaper than beef, broke the ceiling of 100 pesos per kilo in 2021. The highest spike in its cost occurred in October 2022, around the same time that headline inflation peaked.
