Rochelle Walensky resigns, after fighting the pandemic at the head of the CDC

With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic announced by the World Health Organizationalso came the resignation on Friday of Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, for its acronym in English) of the United States.

“I have never been more proud of anything I have done in my professional career,” Walensky wrote when reporting her decision.

The senior official submitted her resignation to the President of the United States, Joe Biden, where, although she did not detail the reasons for her resignation, she acknowledged having mixed feelings.

Walensky, 54, has been in office for just over two years. In his letter to Biden, he also expressed “mixed feelings” about his decision and did not clarify exactly why he was resigning, but noted that the nation is in a time of transition as emergency declarations end.

Biden later said in a statement that Walensky “leaves the CDC a stronger institution, better positioned to confront health threats and protect Americans.”
