The president of Kenya, William Ruto, announced this Friday the creation of a commission of inquiry to clarify the death of more than a hundred followers of a sect led by Paul McKenzie, of the International Church of Good News.
The commission, chaired by Judge Jessie Lesiit, will aim to investigate the deaths, torture and mistreatment on the sect’s grounds in a wooded area in Shakahola, in the Kenyan county of Kilifi, as reported by the newspaper ‘The Nation’ .
In this way, the newly created body will prepare a report on the legal, administrative and institutional rulings, as well as those mainly responsible for the death of the faithful and will present its recommendations to Ruto within a period of six months.
“The commission will recommend administrative legal action or other forms of liability against any public official whose actions or omissions have deliberately or negligently contributed to the Shakahola tragedy,” the Official Gazette of Kenya reported.
The Kenyan authorities have so far recovered the lifeless bodies of 110 people on these lands, although work continues in the area, so it is not ruled out that the number will continue to increase. The main leaders of the sect urged followers to fast until death under the promise that they will meet Jesus Christ in a new life.
