Dozens of people demonstrated Thursday in front of the residence of the United Nations envoy in Sudan, Volker Perthes, to demand his “immediate expulsion” from the African country, amid fighting between the Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). ).

According to videos published by the Tayba TV television channel, which maintains a pro-military line, the demonstration took place in the city of Port Sudan, where Perthes has moved after the evacuation of the mission in the capital, Khartoum.

“The masses of the Red Sea state have surrounded the residence of Volker Perthes and have demanded his immediate expulsion from the state,” picks up the chain, which publishes videos in which people are seen carrying banners and waving Sudanese flags.

In recent months, people affiliated with the army and Sudanese Islamist groups have staged various demonstrations against Perthes, which has also been the target of death threats.

In fact, in April the United Nations showed its “deep concern” over a video circulating on social networks in which a man demands a ‘fatwa’ (Islamic edict) that allows him to assassinate Perthes, head of the Integrated Assistance Mission for the UN Transition in Sudan (UNITAMS).

The country has been plunged into combat between the Army and the RSF since April 15, without the agreements announced for various ceasefires having been transferred to an end to the hostilities, which have left hundreds dead and tens of thousands of internally displaced persons and refugees to the countries of the region.
