Authorities in the Indian state of Manipur order “fire without warning” amid tribal violence

The authorities of the Indian state of Manipur have ordered this Thursday to “shoot without warning” at the crowd and impose a curfew to try to quell the tribal violence that has erupted in the last hours in the region, which has left at least six dead. and up to 9,000 displaced.

Clashes broke out on Wednesday during a march called by the All Manipur Tribal Students Union (ATSUM) in support of the native Naga and Kuki communities after authorities launched a move to grant tribal status to the metei community, majority in the indian stadium.

In this way, the local authorities have approved an order so that the police forces can fire without warning “in extreme cases in which all forms of persuasion, warning or reasonable application of force have been exhausted”, as reported the newspaper ‘Times of India’.

In an attempt to stop the violence, the Indian Army has been deployed in the region. The Chief Minister of Manipur, Nongthombam Biren Singh, has assured that they are taking all necessary measures to maintain “order and security”.
