Amazon alerts Fire TV Stick users to quickly update the device

Bitdefender’s security team has discovered 3 major security bugs within the Fire TV operating system and Amazon has quickly been contacted to release a security patch.

As the Bitdefender group has announced, you should check Amazon for updates if you have a Fire TV Stick. Owners of these popular streaming devices are being warned about some serious vulnerabilities linked to them, which could expose people to attacks by cybercriminals.

As it has been known, this is something that at the moment is affecting only the United Kingdom. The Express reports that 3 bugs in total were identified within the Fire TV OS, with Amazon becoming aware of the issues in late 2022.

As a result, the company has implemented an urgent patchbut it’s vital that customers check their devices to make sure they’re running on the latest version.

Of the 3 errors, they comment that perhaps the most serious could have resulted in the attackers gaining control of the device through a tactic called PIN brute force.

Check if you have any updates for your Fire TV Stick

“The submitted vulnerabilities have been responsibly reported to the vendor through their Bug Bounty program”Bitdefender explained. “Amazon has released fixes for these issues on Fire TV devices and the Fire TV remote app, and the company has no evidence that this issue has been used against customers. Bitdefender has been working closely with the Amazon Fire team TV at all stages of vulnerability disclosure. We would like to extend our thanks for the quick response time, communication, transparency, and escalation,” they add.

Knowing this and although it has not reached Spain – at least this population has not been alerted – it does not hurt to take a look at any update you find. To do this simply go to ‘Settings’ > ‘My Fire TV’ > ‘About’ and select ‘Check for system update’.

If an update turns out to be available, you can install it right away and your system will reboot once it’s finished downloading.

“Security is fundamental to the way we design devices, features and experiences. We’ve released fixes for this issue on Fire TV devices and the Fire TV Remote app. We have no evidence that this issue has been used against customers, and we appreciate the work of the researchers who help bring potential issues to our attention.” Amazon has added for its part.
