A Zimbabwean court sentenced prominent opposition figure Job Sikhala on Wednesday for obstruction of justice, a case opened against him after he demanded justice for the murder of an opposition activist and accused members of the Zimbabwe African National Union government of the incident. -Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF).
Sikhala, a member of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), was arrested nearly a year ago after appearing in a video denouncing the murder of the activist, whose mutilated body was found inside a well.
“The court is convinced beyond any doubt that Sikhala was the one who recorded and published the video,” said judge Marehwanazvo Gofa, who stressed that the opponent “was aware that the police were investigating the murder, despite which made statements that confused the investigations”, as reported by the Zimbabwean newspaper ‘The Herald’.
The case is thus seen for sentencing, pending the completion of the sentence against Sikhala, which would prevent him from running in the presidential and legislative elections scheduled for August in the African country. The opposition has charged that the case against him was politically motivated.
