The European Union has asked Israel on Tuesday to investigate all the circumstances related to the death in prison of Jader Adnan, a member of the Islamic Jihad terrorist group and former spokesman for the formation, after more than 80 days on hunger strike.
“We took note of Adnan’s death in prison and he was protesting
his accusation for incitement and affiliation to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, which is a terrorist organization, arguing that it was based on unsubstantiated evidence,” the bloc’s Foreign Affairs spokesman, Peter Stano, told a press conference.
In this regard, he recalled that the EU has been discussing his case with the Israeli authorities, asking them to open an investigation into all the circumstances of his death. “The EU regrets all the loss of human life and reiterates its commitment to international humanitarian law and to the obligations of all countries in terms of Human Rights towards prisoners,” he said.
Stano has also had words of condemnation for the Palestinian reaction, insisting that the calls to respond by armed groups is “unacceptable” and condemning the firing of rockets against Israel. “We ask the parties to avoid any escalation in the face of an already volatile situation that can lead to more suffering and death,” he warned.
Adnan, 45, was arrested last February in his town of residence, at which time he announced the start of a hunger strike, as he had done on previous occasions during his stays in prison. Thus, he refused to undergo medical examinations and treatment, Palestinian media have reported.
The Palestinian prime minister, Mohamad Shtayé, has led the condemnation of the death in prison of Adnan blaming the Israeli authorities for carrying out an assassination, while Islamic Jihad has affirmed that “the assassination will not go unanswered and the resistance will continue with all its strength and determination.”
