The Egyptian authorities have released this Monday an Al Jazeera journalist detained four years ago, a period that has remained awaiting trial, as confirmed by the Qatari television channel itself.
The released man, Hisham Abdelaziz, an Egyptian national, was released early in the day, as confirmed by his family, who stressed that he is already at home in the capital, Cairo.
Abdelaziz was arrested in June 2019 after traveling to Cairo from Qatar, where he lived, to visit his family. The man was one of several Al Jazeera journalists detained after the 2013 coup that overthrew the then president, the Islamist Mohamed Mursi.
Egypt, along with Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) imposed a boycott on Qatar in 2017, although an agreement was signed in January 2021 to end diplomatic disputes that has led to a reduction in tensions.
However, two other journalists from the Al Jazeera affiliate in Egypt –Bahaeldin Ibrahim and Rabie el Sheikh– continue to be detained in Egypt, for which the Qatari television network has reiterated its call for their release.
