The Iranian Embassy in Saudi Arabia has reported on Monday that it has officially resumed its diplomatic activities as both countries take steps to normalize their bilateral relations, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has reported.
The spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Naser Kanani, has confirmed the opening of the diplomatic legation, as well as the Consulate, and the resumption of operations of the representative of Iran in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah.
“Three representations of Iran began to function normally,” he asserted, according to information from the Iranian news agency IRIB. The measure comes after the arrival in the country on April 12 of an official Iranian delegation.
The reopening responds to the agreement reached between the parties days before with the mediation of China to restore diplomatic relations after a seven-year hiatus.
Iran and Saudi Arabia have thus resumed their diplomatic relations, broken in 2016 after an attack on Saudi missions in Iran at the hands of protesters who demanded to stop the execution of the Shiite cleric Nimr al Nimr.
The agreement between Iran and Saudi Arabia has been applauded by the countries of the region and has opened the possibility of a reduction in the disputes between the two countries in the Middle East, including the conflict in Yemen, where a process of talks with the objective of signing a peace agreement that puts an end to the war that broke out in 2015.
