At least 18 dead after bus fall into ravine in Nayarit, Mexico

( Spanish) — At least 18 people died and 33 more were injured this Saturday after a tour bus fell down a ravine on a highway in the Mexican state of Nayarit, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement on Sunday.

The mishap occurred at kilometer 59 of the federal highway 200 Tepic-Puerto Vallarta, in the municipality of Compostela, the statement added.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the bus came from Guadalajara, Jalisco, and was heading to Guayabitos, in Compostela.

The entity said that 18 people were found dead, including 11 women and 7 men, and that the injured, including more than 10 children, were transferred to different hospitals.

The Prosecutor’s Office did not report on the possible cause of the mishap, but said that it has already started an investigation in this regard.

The mayor of Guadalajara, Pablo Lemus Navarro, said on Twitter that “remains attentive to the needs of the families affected by the accident, we are offering support in the transfers for the injured with ambulances and the Zeus helicopter of the Guadalajara Police, and with all the needs they have”.
