The Minister of National Security of Israel, Itamar Ben Gvir, has approved a regulation that lowers the requirements for the possession of firearms for Israeli citizens, with which it seeks to combat violence and crime.
Any combat soldier who has finished his military service in the last five years, police officers, firefighters and active reservists will be exempt from the personal interview to obtain a weapons license, according to the Israeli portal Walla.
This modification significantly shortens the entire bureaucratic process, which merely consists of submitting a health declaration and the approval of the Police.
Ben Gvir believes that armed civilians are a fundamental part of the strategy to thwart terrorist attacks. “We are going to do whatever is necessary so that all those who meet the criteria have a weapons permit,” argued the minister himself.
