The Chinese authorities have asked the governments of the United States and South Korea on Thursday to avoid “provoking a confrontation” with North Korea as a result of the warnings issued by both countries, which ensure that a nuclear attack by Pyongyang would mean “the end of the regime”.
The spokeswoman for the Asian giant’s Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning, has thus urged the parties to play a “constructive” role and put threats aside, according to the Government in a statement.
In this sense, he has called for containment and has asked Washington and Seoul “not to deliberately provoke an increase in tension and confrontation” in the region.
His words come a day after the presidents of South Korea and the United States, Yoon Suk Yeol and Joe Biden, respectively, met during a visit to Washington. Both have warned of the possibility of a nuclear attack by North Korea and have threatened to take serious reprisals if it occurs.
For Beijing, however, Washington is “ignoring the security situation in the region and is exploiting the issue of the Korean peninsula to generate tensions.” “They are provoking confrontations between the parties, undermining the strategic interests of other countries,” Mao said.
