CMA: Nintendo Switch is technically unable to run Call of Duty

Although several companies will not go to gamescom 2022, Ubisoft confirms attendance

The CMA verdict was clear and represented the first major hurdle to the deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard King. Both companies tried to use Nintendo to support their deal, but ultimately failed in part because the CMA found the Nintendo Switch incapable of running. call of duty.

The UK Competition and Markets Commission (CMA) has released a lengthy 418-page document revealing the arguments, testimony and evidence that led to its verdict.

To support its purchase and remove concerns from regulatory bodies in various countries, Microsoft made a bunch of deals with platforms, cloud service providers, and even Nintendo to-go. call of duty to more players and support the idea that its intention is not to make it exclusive, while trying to dismiss Sony’s argument that Nintendo was different from it and Xbox and that it offered content more aimed at children.

But Microsoft failed miserably in this section.

Nintendo does not represent competition for PlayStation and Xbox

The CMA noted that in terms of “content, target audience and console technology,” in that regard, the regulator found that “Nintendo consoles compete less closely with either Xbox or PlayStation.”

The most striking thing about the CMA’s observations after doing its research and seeing the evidence presented is that it considered that the Nintendo Switch is not capable of running call of duty under the same conditions as the Xbox and PlayStation versions, but something similar would happen with the versions Legacy Edition of FIFA for Switch, which offer an inferior experience.

“Nintendo does not currently offer CoD [Call of Duty]and we have seen no evidence to suggest that your consoles are technically capable of running a version of CoD that is similar to those on Xbox and PlayStation in terms of gameplay quality and content,” the CMA noted.

Something interesting, however, is that the CMA did not talk about the possibility that call of duty can run on Nintendo Switch through the cloud, a resource that has made it possible for more demanding titles to reach the technically inferior console.

In case you missed it: Blocking Activision’s purchase disappointed Xbox fans and criticized PlayStation leader.

CMA: Nintendo offers content more aimed at children

Although Microsoft tried to refute the idea that Nintendo offers more content for children, even claiming that there are more adult games on Switch than on Xbox, the evidence that the CMA collected from external studies supported that idea.

“We note that the Switch offers some content for mature audiences. However, technical differences (…) mean that users generally do not play certain types of games on the Switch, which are more popular on Xbox and PlayStation,” expressed the CMA, which found that the most popular games on the Switch “tend to be aimed at a family audience”; while this type of content is rather “complementary” on PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

“Therefore, we consider that while the Switch may be a replacement for either PlayStation or Xbox for some gamers, overall it is unlikely,” the CMA concluded.
