BRUSSELS, 26 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –
The European Union considers positive the contact between the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelensky, the first call that has taken place between the two since the start of the Russian invasion fourteen months ago, and has stressed that any negotiation of peace has to be set according to Kiev parameters.
“This call was long awaited and it is very good news. It is a first step that China has maintained contact with Ukraine and we want to say that any significant initiative for peace in Ukraine is welcome,” said the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Policy , Josep Borrell, speaking from Colombia, where he is visiting.
In this sense, he has valued mobilizing countries like China for the effort to “build” a peace that is “fair”, insisting that any negotiation process will be defined by the conditions set by Ukraine.
“We all want peace, me too, and the one who wants peace more than anyone is Ukraine, who are the ones who suffer from the war,” said the head of community diplomacy.
The call, which comes after international pressure for Beijing to take Kiev into account after launching its principles to achieve peace in Ukraine, is considered important in the community capital, according to a European spokesman who recalls that the possibility of these contacts it had already been discussed at the EU-Ukraine summit and passed on to Chinese and Ukrainian leaders.
Likewise, the spokesman takes note of Beijing’s intention to send a special envoy to Ukraine and says that the EU expects to know more details about the initiative, although it has stressed that any possible negotiations must meet the criteria set by Kiev.
In this sense, he recalled his support for Zelenski’s peace formula so that any future end to the conflict guarantees the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country.
