The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has advocated this Tuesday from Madrid, where he is on an official visit, for promoting a peace movement in Ukraine to avoid a third world war or the use of nuclear weapons.
During the closure of the Spain-Brazil Business Meeting, held this Tuesday at Casa América, Lula assured that it is necessary to “try to find a common denominator to reach peace.” “I am convinced that we can get (to it),” she said.
Lula has highlighted the role that Brazil has had in the context of the conflict, which has tried to act as a mediator along with the efforts of other countries, such as France or Spain. Thus, he has affirmed that he will discuss a possible peace initiative with the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, during his meeting on Wednesday.
Likewise, he has assured that, after speaking with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, he hopes to speak with the French president, Emmanuel Macron, next week with a view to a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine.
Sánchez does not share everything raised by Lula, but he does welcome any effort to promote peace and is willing to debate, according to government sources. The two countries share this objective, but Sánchez already made it clear after his visit to China that any agreement or negotiation must first have the approval of Ukraine, the country that has been attacked.
Spain positively values the efforts that different countries are making to promote peace, but it is clear that it must be a just peace so that it can be lasting and that it respects the principles of the United Nations Charter. From Moncloa they maintain that this also involves the withdrawal of all Russian troops and accountability for the violations of International Law that have been committed.
