The spokesman for the United States Department of State, Vedant Patel, has assured this Tuesday that he continues to pressure the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Army to comply with the three-day ceasefire decreed on Monday morning .
“We are coordinating with regional and international leaders, as well as the Sudanese parties, to create a committee to oversee the negotiation process for the permanent cessation of hostilities in Sudan,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.
Likewise, he has affirmed that he hopes that the cessation of hostilities will be “long-lasting” and that it can be “extended” over time. “I am not going to go into details about the diplomatic talks, but we continue to be in close contact with Sudanese military and civilian leaders,” Patel added.
The RSF and the Sudanese Army have accused each other during the day of failing to comply with the three-day ceasefire after the United States announced on the eve an agreement for a cessation of hostilities in the African country.
The hostilities broke out in the context of an increase in tensions around the integration of the RSF -led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, alias ‘Hemedti’, who is also vice president of the Sovereign Transition Council– within the Forces Armed Forces, a key part of an agreement signed in December to form a new civilian government and reactivate the transition.
