The Italian Coast Guard rescues 1,200 people in several shipwrecks in the Mediterranean

25 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Italian Coast Guard has rescued 1,200 people on Monday night who were crossing the Mediterranean in at least four boats that have sunk and have left two dead and twenty missing for the moment.

Open Arms has rescued 47 people, including a pregnant woman in serious condition and a baby, from one of those boats, which they reported had been adrift for two days. The people on board are already in Lampedusa.

As reported by the Rai chain, another of the boats was a small seven-meter boat in which 38 people were traveling and that it had already leaked when the Coast Guard agents arrived. A 26-year-old woman who was traveling on board has died.

Another Tunisian vessel, a fishing boat, has also rescued 40 people before the arrival of the Italian authorities, who have finally taken care of the migrants. These are some of the shipwrecks reported by the Italians, but they have stated that more could have occurred in the last few hours.

A few weeks ago, the Italian Government decreed a state of emergency to deal with the increase in migratory flow, a measure that will be in force for six months and will provide state structures with five million euros from the National Emergency Fund with the aim, among others, to facilitate the reception of migrants, as well as to reinforce the repatriation and expulsion tools.
